Answer: Speak
From: Lauren
One time in Italy at this B&B this ancient, cute little lady poured out her life story to me (at least that is what I imagine she was telling me). I would have given anything to be able to respond with a few relevant, kind words.
I wish with all my heart I could have witnessed this! How did you react? -

Well, I'm autistic and life feels like this already sometimes. But there are ways around it. And there are also forms of communication that don't involve speaking. Writing is communicating, sign language is communicating, animals communicate without language, and I'd even say that there is communication that can be experienced in nature. Also, I can understand a good portion of my husband's native language, but I can't speak it. I like
being able to understand various different languages. Sure it would be nice to be able to speak any of them fluently, heck it'd be great to actually be able to speak English more fluently (what's in my brain just does not come out of my mouth so easily). But I don't think that I'd want to give up my ability to understand more, just to be able to speak better to one group.

Have you ever played "God of War?" the latest one, where Kratos has a son that he is trying to raise within the Nordic pantheon of Midgard. I’m playing this now.
One of the main enemies is Baldur, son of Odin. The dude was given this blessing/curse of being invulnerable, but he can’t feel anything. This is something he is very upset about. Dude can’t feel cold, heat, pain, anything.
I’d imagine that would be extremely similar to understanding every language, but not being able to speak them. I’m going 100% on just speaking on extra language fluently.
If I had to pick, I’m going Italian. I’m Irish and Scottish roots, but my wife has Italian roots (We are both American). That being said, I think it would freak out about half of her extended family. Also, the Italians speak with such gusto. It sounds like an energetic language
Geez, it seems like whenever I'm feeling blue I read one of your responses and it turns that frown of mine upside down. - Chris

Answer: Speak
Honestly, it is my DREAM to be able to speak another language fluently simply so I could talk smack about someone in front of them and they’d never know it. Does this make me mean, petty, and messy? Yes, absolutely. Am I still learning Italian for this purpose? Yes, absolutely.

This is actually an issue I have with my grandparents who don't speak English. I can vaguely understand other languages (including the ones my grandparents speak), but I can't a back and forth conversation. Personally, it would be life-changing to be able to speak with my grandparents in their native tongue. As an English-speaker, I have the privilege to get by when traveling, especially in touristy areas, because it's more common for
someone to know specks of English or have English-language accommodations.
